The hack is great, and I wanted to point you to something similar that I built last summer. You can find a technical report about it here:

Shortly, the tool automatically translates SPARQL into IMAP queries and translates the result back into RDF/XML. I used to feed the results of my queries back to Yahoo Pipes, and search for generic information about email senders (however, I agree that getting FOAF is much better).
